NICE CG103 Delirium: prevention, diagnosis and management in hospital and long-term care

This NICE guideline on the diagnosis and treatment of delirium in adults was updated in January 2023. It covers delirium in hospital and in long-term residential care or nursing homes and also covers identifying those at risk in these settings and preventing onset.

The guideline makes eight recommendations covering the below:

  • Think delirium
  • Risk factor assessment
  • Indicators of delirium: at presentation
  • Preventing delirium
  • Indicators of delirium: daily observations
  • Assessment and diagnosis
  • Treating delirium
  • Information and support

The overall aim of the guideline is to improve diagnosis and reduce hospital stays/complications.

In January 2023 evidence was reviewed and new recommendations were made on assessing and diagnosing delirium.
