MHRA Approves Low-Carbon Version of Trixeo Aerosphere Inhaler for COPD Patients

16 May, 2025

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has approved a new, environmentally friendly version of the Trixeo Aerosphere inhaler for adults with moderate to severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Introduction

COPD affects approximately 1.2 million people in the UK and is the second most common cause of emergency hospital admissions. Trixeo Aerosphere is a triple combination inhaler used to alleviate symptoms such as shortness of breath, wheezing, and cough, and to prevent exacerbations.

Environmental Advancement

The newly approved version of Trixeo Aerosphere replaces the propellant HFA-134a with HFO-1234ze(E), a fluorinated gas with near-zero global warming potential. This change aims to reduce the environmental impact of inhalers without altering the active ingredients, recommended dose, or clinical use.

The MHRA’s approval is supported by clinical evidence demonstrating that the new propellant delivers the same dose and therapeutic effect as the original formulation. The assessment included evaluations of product quality, device performance, and stability.

Availability and Monitoring

The low-carbon version of Trixeo Aerosphere is expected to be available in the UK from the second half of 2025. Until then, the current version will remain accessible to patients.

As with all medicines, the MHRA will continue to monitor the safety and effectiveness of Trixeo Aerosphere. Patients experiencing suspected side effects are encouraged to report them through the Yellow Card scheme.

Conclusion

The approval of the low-carbon Trixeo Aerosphere inhaler represents a significant step towards reducing the environmental impact of healthcare treatments. By maintaining clinical efficacy while lowering greenhouse gas emissions, this development aligns with the UK’s commitment to achieving Net Zero and enhancing sustainable healthcare practices.
